Vaughan, ON (March 2, 2020) – Today, Mackenzie Health Foundation is excited to announce a $5-million joint gift from Promenade Shopping Centre partners Liberty Development Corporation and the Serruya family to help build and equip the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. This transformational gift will be recognized by naming the hospital’s internal Main Street, which will be the main corridor for patients and visitors to travel across the hospital.

“The Liberty Development Corporation and Serruya Family gift helps further Mackenzie Health’s commitment to creating positive patient experiences, right from the moment patients enter our doors. The Main Street will be a central space for patients, staff and visitors and will be bright, inviting and fully accessible. We’re grateful for the support and look forward to a continued relationship,” says Altaf Stationwala, President and CEO, Mackenzie Health.

As a supporter of Mackenzie Health for more than 18 years, Liberty Development Corporation continues to generously contribute to the Ultimate campaign. Through the leadership of Fred Darvish, Latif Fazel and Brendan Murphy, this gift represents an ongoing, impactful philanthropic relationship.

“On behalf of our partners and team at Liberty Development Corporation, we’re proud to support the Ultimate campaign and Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, and this is just the beginning,” says Fred Darvish, President, Liberty Development Corporation. “We look forward to growing our commitment and continuing our philanthropic journey with Mackenzie Health.”

Mackenzie Health Foundation is pleased to welcome the Serruya family as first-time donors. As longstanding and respected community health advocates, the Serruya family are committed to doing their part to give back to their community.

“Supporting the health and wellness of our community has always been important to all of us,” says Michael Serruya. “We are thrilled to be part of bringing the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital to York Region.”

When the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital opens its doors, patients and visitors will travel through the 444 square-foot-long internal Main Street to access many areas of the hospital – including the main elevator bank, Patient Registration, Magna Emergency Department, Medical Imaging, the Vic de Zen Family Welcome Centre, Spiritual Care Centre, and a variety of public spaces including dining and retail.

“This generous gift towards Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital helps bring the ultimate health care experience to our community. We are grateful to the leadership of Liberty Development Corporation and the Serruya family, as we continue to build upon our community’s inspiration and generosity and ensure the success of the Ultimate campaign,” says Krista Finlay, President, Mackenzie Health Foundation.

As the first net new hospital in York Region in more than 30 years, it will join Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, alongside Mackenzie Health’s community-based locations, in providing increased access to state-of-the-art health care to residents.

Vaughan, ON (February 6, 2020) – Today, Mackenzie Health Foundation is pleased to announce a $1-million gift from R. Ferri Automotive to help build and equip the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. This transformational gift will be recognized by naming the family lounge and play area within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the R. Ferri Automotive Family Lounge.

“Gifts like the one we’re announcing here today have the potential to change the lives of so many families who will walk through the doors of Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital,” says Altaf Stationwala, President and CEO, Mackenzie Health. “Providing a peaceful and inviting space for families to rest and recharge when their loved ones are being cared for at the hospital is just as important as the clinical care we provide to our patients.”

Remo Ferri and R. Ferri Automotive have been involved in the Vaughan community for many years and have a long history of giving to organizations that support children’s health. The Annual Ferrari of Ontario Rally marked its 15th year this past fall and Mackenzie Health was a proud partner for the first time.

“As members of the Vaughan community, we have been waiting a long time for the moment where we can invest in our local hospital,” says Remo Ferri, President, R. Ferri Automotive. “Helping to provide a room where kids and their families can take their minds off of the reason they’re in the hospital is something we can be proud of.”

Mackenzie Health offers a one-stop suite of services to fully support women and their children through some of life’s most poignant moments – from pregnancy and delivery to neonatal and pediatric care. Once Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital opens, the Woman and Child Program will be equipped for close to 4,000 births a year, increasing our ability to offer seamless and compassionate care with a unique family focus. The NICU will provide advanced care for high-risk and premature babies by our expert team of nurses and physicians supported by the latest lifesaving equipment.

“Opening the first net new hospital in York Region in more than 30 years wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of corporate partners like R. Ferri Automotive,” says Krista Finlay, President, Mackenzie Health Foundation. “This gift will help us to ensure that our community has expanded close-to-home access to the ultimate in health care.”

Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will be Canada’s first smart hospital, featuring devices and information systems that communicate with each other to anticipate the needs of patients and health care providers. The 1.2 million sq. ft. hospital will provide 350 patient beds with the ability to increase capacity to 550 beds. “Since coming to Canada from Italy as a young man, Remo Ferri has been determined to make dreams come true – first his own dreams and those of his family, then the dreams of the customers he serves and now with his support, the dreams of so many in Vaughan who have been dreaming of having a hospital of their own,” says the Honourable Maurizio Bevilacqua, Mayor of the City of Vaughan and Chair of the Ultimate campaign. “We’re so thankful to the Ferri family and R. Ferri Automotive for their generous spirit.”

Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will help build much-needed capacity in the health system by doubling access to care in the community and will be the first net new hospital to open in Ontario in more than 30 years

Vaughan, ON (June 16, 2020) – Today, Mackenzie Health unveiled the name of its much-anticipated Vaughan Hospital — Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital — in recognition of a generous $40 million gift from the Cortellucci family. The announcement underlines the dedication and commitment of the Cortellucci family to the health care of the community and ensuring an exceptional patient experience. Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is scheduled to open in early 2021 and will create much-needed capacity in the health care system.

“Today’s announcement marks a historic moment in Mackenzie Health’s history and an unprecedented investment in our community,” said Mackenzie Health President and CEO, Altaf Stationwala. “Never before has there been a more important time to ensure we have the ability to safeguard the health and well-being of our communities and provide the ultimate in health care to the residents of southwest York Region and beyond. The Cortellucci family has demonstrated an incredible commitment to shaping the health care of the future and we’re so proud to honour them in this way.”

Nearly one year ago, the Cortellucci family announced the record-setting $40 million gift — the largest single donation in Mackenzie Health’s history. Today, Mackenzie Health leadership and the Cortellucci family unveiled the official new name of the Vaughan hospital alongside Premier Doug Ford; Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health; Michael Tibollo, MPP for Vaughan-Woodbridge; and Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua.

“During these unprecedented times, it’s never been more important to invest in our hospitals and give our heroic frontline staff a state-of-the-art place to provide quality care in the community,” said Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario. “We’re incredibly proud to join Mackenzie Health, the Cortellucci family, and partners from every sector to build a world-class hospital in Ontario that will put patients and their families first.”

The Cortellucci family has a history of supporting worthy causes in York Region, especially as it relates to health care, and has been a long-standing supporter of Mackenzie Health. In fact, the Emergency Department at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital is named in honour of a $2 million donation from Nick and Rosanne Cortellucci made in 2006. In recent years, the Cortellucci family has also supported Hospice Vaughan and Niagara University Vaughan

“Having called Vaughan home for the last 25 years, our family feels profoundly grateful to be in a position to give back to our community,” said the Cortellucci family. “We’re humbled to play a small part in contributing to the creation of a first of its kind smart hospital in Canada, which we hope will benefit Vaughan citizens for many years to come. We also hope this gift embodies the giving spirit of our community and inspires others to join us to transform health care in Canada.”

The new Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will be Canada’s first smart hospital and the first net new hospital to be built in Ontario in more than 30 years. It will double the communities’ access to health care and feature fully integrated systems and medical technology that directly share information with health professionals to enable improved patient care. Once complete, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will increase Mackenzie Health’s urgent and emergent care capacity, provide more advanced diagnostic imaging and enhanced programs in obstetrics, pediatrics and mental health.

The $40 million gift from the Cortellucci family brings Mackenzie Health closer to its goal of raising $250 million to help build and equip Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and enhance care at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital. While the Ontario government has invested $1.3 billion for construction of the facility, the local share of the project, including medical equipment and a portion of construction costs, requires the support of the community.

“The Cortellucci family has been a pillar of the Vaughan community for decades, dedicating their lives to giving back,” said Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “This commitment to giving and their dedication to making our community a better place should encourage us all to do the same. Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will be a landmark for the City of Vaughan and an epicentre of health care excellence for the province.”

ADDITIONAL QUOTES:

“As we continue our fight against COVID-19, increasing hospital capacity in communities like Vaughan is critical to help us respond to the virus,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “I want to recognize the Cortellucci family for their generous contribution to Mackenzie Health. This new hospital is truly impressive, and demonstrates what we can achieve when government, hospitals and community partners work together.”

  • Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health

“The Cortellucci family has shown time and again their dedication to making this hospital a reality and we couldn’t be more appreciative of their support. We’re thrilled to celebrate the generosity of the Cortellucci family by naming what will become such an important part of our community after them: Canada’s first smart hospital, the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.”

  • Krista Finlay, President and CEO, Mackenzie Health Foundation
