Vaughan, ON (August 12, 2019) – The Carpenters’ Union (locals 27 and 675) has cemented its place in southwestern York Region’s history with a generous $1-million gift to help build and equip Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. The gift will be directed towards the main waiting area within the state-of-the-art Magna Emergency Department, which will support approximately 75,000 patient visits a year.

The Carpenters’ Union is a long-time supporter of Mackenzie Health and a key partner in advancing construction at Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. Many of its members live in the community and have exceptional pride in building the first new hospital in York Region in more than 30 years.

To celebrate this incredible gift, a barbecue was held on Friday, August 9 at Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital to recognize the hundreds of carpenters and interior systems workers who are working tirelessly to build the 1.2 million square foot hospital. This gift brings Mackenzie Health Foundation’s total amount raised to $162 million of its $250-million goal, which represents the community share of the $1.6 billion project.

The Magna Emergency Department at Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will allow Mackenzie Health to better address the increasing demands for urgent and emergency care in its growing communities of Richmond Hill, Vaughan, King and across southwestern York Region. It will include seven spacious treatment zones, including rooms dedicated to resuscitation, acute care, minor treatments, mental health, domestic abuse and sexual assault. When it opens in late 2020, Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will feature fully integrated “smart” technology systems and medical devices – a first for a Canadian community hospital.

“This generous gift brings us one step closer to delivering the ‘smart’ hospital our community deserves. We’re grateful for the Carpenters’ Union contribution and community leadership. The main waiting area in Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital’s Emergency Department will benefit from this gift and help ensure that it meets the needs of patients and their families.”
 – Altaf Stationwala, President and CEO, Mackenzie Health

“It’s inspiring to see the community come together in support of Mackenzie Health. The Carpenters’ Union has shown great dedication, generosity and leadership, in both building the hospital and giving back to it. This gift will make a significant impact on our growing community for years to come.”
 – Rina Pillitteri, Board Chair, Mackenzie Health Foundation

“Our members take great pride in helping to build this much-needed hospital for our growing and deserving community. It’s an honour for us to be able to give back and make a difference, both as workers and donors. We’re proud to be supporting Mackenzie Health Foundation in bringing quality care close to home for the residents of southwestern York Region.”
 – Tony Iannuzzi, Executive Secretary Treasurer, Carpenters’ Union
