The impact of donor generosityPatient Story: Palliative Care Unit
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the palliative care unit at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital underwent renovations last year that are having heartfelt impact on end-of-life care for our patients and their families.
A fully refurbished and much larger family lounge, designed with families in mind, was a much needed enhancement for this unit. The new space, which includes a washroom with a shower and a kitchen, allows families to remain close to their loved ones in their final days and offers a comfortable and serene space for them to relax.
“Palliative care is a key component to the continuum of treatment and compassionate care at Mackenzie Health,” Dr. Brian Berger, Division Head, Continuing Care and Rehabilitation at Mackenzie Health, says. “We want the focus to be on the entire family in this final stage of a patient’s care journey. Giving families a place to do the things they would otherwise have to go home to do allows for more time spent together, as well as helps to ease anxiety about leaving their loved ones.”
